Proud Word Nerd

Words are the method to my madness of expression.
Words, visually bland marks of curved and straight semblance, grown through sketched and verbal repetition, bring purpose and distinction to our species' survival. Words serve as our botched attempt to articulate reality. Words are the substitute for physical actuality.

The challenge of clearly and eloquently communicating the metaphysical phenomenon of my own ambivalent melody is the most fundamental challenge I will encounter. Expression is the largest struggle in identification that we all encounter.

Words works to represent ideas, experiences, feelings, people, and places in the past, present and future-- while the irony of dictation roots in its inability to transcend from the perceived time and space of existence. Language is overwhelmed by the indistinction between physical and mental reality, only to be perpetuated by the natural silence of our involuntary biologic operation and the presumed belief in immortal souls.

We have been provided with a secondhand medium of expression, paired with an ever-evolving and stipulating formula defined in extensive series of publications. Language is the ultimate dilemma for intellectuals-- the pursuit of honest formulation-- "running the gauntlet" over idioms and cliches shaped from the ambiguity of over-exploited symbols.

I am often asked, "what's another word for....?" or "what does that word mean?" ... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

A group of my athletically- inclined friends (apologies on perpetuating the jock stereotype) have instituted a rule in their apartment: Chelsea is not allowed to use "big words" past 11:30 P.M. "Big words" is a concept I have yet to completely grasp, though I'm often reminded of the time if I use a words over three-syllables, or relating to governmental processes. To combat their obstinate attitudes, I readily encourage them into using these said "big words" in a sentence after I do... Earning me the nickname Merriam Marlow (as in the Merriam Webster Dictionary.)

Visual Thesaurus

By using a visual thesaurus, I was able to see my chosen word's meaning truly come alive and expand more than any other tool or friend I've prodded. My chosen word "escape" grew branches to represent an array of scenarios in which the word could be used. I have already bookmarked this tool with plans to utilize it in the future. Though I am a wordy writer, I still feel each words carries powerful weight. Microsoft Word's thesaurus offers minimal alternatives, so I am thrilled to now have the Visuword site.

The alternatives I really enjoyed for the word "escape" were "negligence" and "dreamer."

Dreamer: A person who escapes into a world of fantasy
Negligence: The failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances

As a means of escape from immediate reality, we all have developed methods-- artist release, sleep, nature walks, etc. The contrast between the two words reminds me that our escape method efficiency is all about perspective. A dreamer may be seen as negligent by those refusing to broaden their perspectives. Everyone is entitled to find their own method of happiness through escaping the duties of societal norms. I sympathize with this idea.
